I just finished another Brooklyn map for They Draw and Travel. This map shows a neighborhood in Brooklyn I have lived longer than any other in my life. It was hard to edit for this map because there is so much more I could show you that is fun and cool about this place. If you ever come to this area, Saturdays are great for also checking out the Brooklyn Flea and the Farmer's Market in neighboring Fort Greene. There is amazing food/drink and cool little shops in the Bed-Stuy/Clinton Hill/Fort Greene 'hoods (Bed-Stuy and Fort Greene sandwich Clinton Hill East-ish and West-ish )along Fulton Avenue, Dekalb Avenue and Myrtle Avenue. But don't miss out on some central Clinton Hill treats off the main food drags. Locanda Vini e Olli, Le Grand Dakar, Choice Market and Choice Greene are not to be missed for dining and coffee.

Going through old sketchbooks I found a sketch for some girls I saw on Dekalb Avenue at Vanderbilt in Brooklyn - in 2oo7. I liked how the trio were all in black. I also thought it was interesting, with the exception of the girl in pants, that they looked fashionably current. I updated the sketch by giving the first girl high-waisted print pants, instead of the capris she was really wearing, and then assigned them all shoes. I hadn't drawn the shoes in the sketch. This task allowed me to go shoe shopping for my models. From left to right they are wearing, Bensimon lace-up flats - gris fonce, Jeffery Campbell mariel wedges and Madewell peekaboo slingbacks.

I saw this chickie while on a journey to see an exhibit at the Society of Illustrators. She had on skin tight silver pants, but not the lamé leggings. They were a thick material and stiff and cut like jeans. They were odd and cool.

A couple girls I saw at Union Square a few weeks ago. I like the transition from winter to spring with the chunky scarf & coat then a Mori Girl style floral and cotton lace layering over cut-offs. And then other girl, head to toe black with cream colored platform sandals. Maybe she was breaking them in for spring. I liked the look though.

I was going through some very old sketchbooks and found some doodles I had done after nights out clubbing at Tracks DC as a teenager. I think they are pretty funny and loved how they show the fashion of the time. It is practically twenty years later and what is it they say? Fashion comes back around every twenty years? I am definitely doing doubles takes at young girls looking like they raided my teenage closet. Have a look at teenage doodles of teenage fashion observations!
Check out the romper on the left. We've been seeing those on the street at least since last spring. I see them in the shops for this season too.

Okay, the chick in the middle is totally in club gear (I hope) but the two girls on the bottom reminded me of how popular overalls were then.

This is a year later and not from Tracks but from a movie rental shop in suburbia. I still remember this guy. He was awesome! Wearing double plaid with a sky blue flopped over mohawk and school bus yellow combat boots.

I never stopped doodling what people are wearing wherever I go. I am glad these old drawing survived. I plan on making a little series of city kid observations. Check out tomorrow's post.

雛祭り Hina Matsuri

In Japan, today is Hina Matsuri, or as I knew it growing up, Girl's Day. As a little girl living in Japan, I have vivid memories of my mother setting up the dolls, getting dressed in my seafoam green kimono and, my favorite part, the pink/red hair ornament. I think the holiday has evolved since I was able to experience it. They now have children's day in May, celebrating boys and girls together.

Here are the basics about Hina Matsuri:

In Japan, the 3rd day of March is celebrated by displaying Ohina-sama dolls. It is believed that these dolls take the place of little girls when illness and injury come. They are the girls’ protectors. Care is taken that the Ohina-sama dolls do not become sick or hurt either, so they are reverently handled. At a minimum, a set of hina-ningyo (dolls) will include an emperor and empress, but can have many more complementary dolls that form a court for the royal couple. (My mother had the whole set!) The dolls are dressed in traditional Heian period costume (794-1185 A.D.). Read more about Hina Matsuri here.

books without illustrations are sad

There is an article today in The New York Times, "Picture Books No Longer a Staple for Children" talking about the decline of the children's picture book. This is such a shame as the decrease in sales of picture books is apparently being driven by parents who want their kids to be literate faster. I'm glad this article points out the other benefits of having illustration joined with words for cognition. Personally, I remember being angry with my mother the first time she handed me a book without pictures in it. I have always wanted my words to be illustrated.

p.s. it would have been nice and ironic is they had illustrated the article instead of using photography. get clever NYT!

The Japanese tradition of Setsubun, which literally means seasonal division, marks the Japanese lunar calendar’s transition from winter to spring. On the third day of February, families practice Mamemaki (the bean throwing ritual), which entails the Toshi Otoko (the oldest male household member born in the animal sign of that year) throwing Irimame (pan-heated or packaged roasted soy beans) around the house and out of windows and doors while shouting, "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" (Demons out! Fortune in!). Throwing the beans is meant to purify the home against Oni (demons), who may bring bad health and misfortune. To bring themselves good luck, each person is supposed to pick up and eat the same number of beans as their age. In addition, families may place a wreath made of sardine heads, garlic or onion, and holly leaves on the entrance of their house to ward off evil spirits; holly leaves are a Shinto symbol thought to sting oni. A contemporary addition to the Muramachi-era (1392–1573) ritual of Mamemaki has children wearing oni masks and shouting and thowing beans at each other.
The Japanese can celebrate the coming of spring together by attending Setsuban festivals at Buddhist and Shinto shrines, where monks and celebrities throw beans into the crowd. These are crowded affairs, with throngs of people pushing each other to get the beans and other treats—usually sweets, candies, money and prizes.
There are many stories of how the Setsubun rituals originated, but one of the more famous ones involves an oni disguising his true nature to an old widow. The oni showed the widow a magic mallet he carried and created a beautiful kimono in front of her. Tempted, the old widow plotted to steal the kimono and mallet from the disguised oni. Surprised by the greed of the old woman, the oni revealed his true self to her. The widow was so frightened that she threw the first thing that was nearby, which happened to be Mame (beans). The beans hurt the oni, cause him to flee; however, he took his mallet and kimono with him, leaving her wiser but without the objects of her desires.

my illustration portfolio at walkcycle.com has been updated in the "lifestyle" section. more updates on the way. i am busy with some fun new projects at the mo'. to come when they are finished/published: work for subaru, work for teen magazine and the cosmogirl holiday card (i'm especially excited about this one). i just finished up some stuff for an educational publication in canada and am working on a US one now.

i usually have some personal work kicking around when i am less busy (see above - i like to print out my computer-y sketches, scribble on them and use them as guides as i go along - otherwise i can never remember all the things i want to change or add.) and i am still trying to get the cybelicious.com site functioning more smoothly. sorry it's crap on a PC right now. i don't mean for it to be, i just don't have a PC to do an quality assurance on.

hello. bonjour. konnichiwa. in order to up my creativity quotient, i have started a new website to separate the illustration work i do to entertain myself as opposed to my professional illustration. my personal work can be seen in a bare bones website i am still working on called cybelicious. and i have a new blog to go with it. my illo friday images and other experimentation will be shown on the new blog and website. this blog will return to what it was orginally; more about my professional work with the occasional commentary about my love of new york city and travel.

i was dismayed to see this new york times' article about the kapalua bay resort on maui getting ready to be mowed down and built into timeshares. not that i could ever afford to stay in such a place, but i think it's unfortunate that such a lovely piece of architecture is being torn down. and a hotel gives the average joe more of a chance to experience a glamourous bit of hawaiian paradise than a timeshare does.
the reason i even know about this place is because i did some work for starwood hawaiian hotels a few years back and was flown out to the hotels and resorts i was to illustrate. it was a great job in that way because, having never been to hawaii before, i could not possibly understand what it feels like to be there through the stay-at-home kind of research. this resort's central building was built in the '70s and is modern, but i think it would have stood the test of time. there are no doors or windows and as you walk into the lobby, you feel little removed from all the surrounding nature. also, the buildings are set way back from the water, so if you go down to the beach or just sit on the lawn, you don't have a big building hovering over you.
anyway, i was sad to hear something pretty, albeit mostly only attainable for the upper crust, was being replaced by something unpretty and still for the wealthy.

an illustration friday topic coincidence, i just finished this spring-y pic this week.

my language for "friday" this time is slovenian, since i was just there. it's one of those places where i had to go there to get language books on the language. i had this problem with estonia before i went there. couldn't find estonian - english dictionaries anywhere in the states. now it's my new collection thing; to make sure i have language books from all the countries i've been to.

ink vs. ink

i used this doodle to see the difference between my lines and adobe illustrator's ink brushes. i can see which are which but i don't think anyone else would know. however, maybe it's not a fair test. there are only three main computer generated ink lines (the strand of her hair, her hairline between her forehead and ear, and her jacket) and the rest of the lines are converted from my scanned sketch (and are slightly altered by the live trace filter). maybe if the whole image had computer generated ink brush contours one could see the repetition of using the same brush filter. it doesn't matter anyway. i will continue to ink my images with brush and ink because i think it's fun. i guess it's nice to know adobe is a decent substitute.

marathon day

the new york city marathon is streaming past my home right now. i love it. i take my dog out and cheer them on for a while. inside my home i listen to the din of cheering and the high school marching band.
i am getting ready for my second journey to asia this year. in the spring i went on a two week trip to hong kong, hanoi and danang. this time is three week vacation to kuala lumpur, hong kong and tokyo. i'm very excited but i think not working for three weeks and being without my dog is going to weird me out a little bit. i'm not very good at relaxing, but i love to travel to new places. i will do my best to post while i'm away. cheers.

i normally don't find the spring fashion shows as exciting as the fall shows but this season was a pleasant surprise. the paris shows had the most interesting clothes via Max Mara, Rochas, Balenciaga, and Lanvin. i can't remeber what city they showed in but, i liked the spring collections of Fendi, Junya Watanabe, Miu Miu and Project Alabama as well. i'll probably be doodling the new clothes for a while, so the next few posts will be fashion-y.

well, i think i am confident enough now to leave the bitmapped contours lines behind when i do this style of illustration. this image is completely vectors. live trace is just what i needed to work my drawings the way i've wanted. the top image is the finished product, but i love clicking the layers on and off, so i thought i'd share that too. my next step for this style is to incorporate backgrounds more.

the ease of blogging makes it easy for me to procrastinate updating my website (not that i've been updating my blog lately). on the other hand, i like how the blog makes me want to update it all the time - i.e., i sketch more often trying to come up with postable images. well, here's one. just inks right now. i'm going to play with the whole vector/ink/trace deal some more. and my site is updated. pretty much everywhere, little nips and tucks.

i went to the semi-permanent conference(?) this past weekend. i've never done one of those events before. the speakers were interesting but it's hard to sit in a dark theatre for mucho hours two days in a row. i thought it would be a space where i could doodle while i listened to the presentations. i fidget too much to sit still for so long. fafi was my favorite speaker. i liked her matter-of-factness. plus i had recently bought a drawing of hers, and it's always nice to get to hear the voice of someone who's art you own.

i'm still perfecting my perfect travel kit for art supplies. lately it's been a 'watercolour wheel stack pack' by koh-i-noor for chartpak. it's a small travel set of pan gouaches. the koh-i-noor colours are hardly my favorite (which are schmincke HKS colours) but schmincke do not seem to come in travel form. i have enough trouble finding the schmincke tubes in the states. my travel brushes are also not my favorite (which are winsor & newton series 7) but the japanese pentel neo-sables i use are great travel brushes because they do well with both my abuse and the abuse of travel. and, of course, good ol' pencil and paper come in handy, partnered with my beloved japanese tombo and e-knock mechanical erasers by mitsubishi. i use them regularly. all erasers travel easy anyway i guess. here are some items, finished and unfinished, from my sketchbook taken along to the beach this past weekend:

while bumbling about nyc's financial district looking for a new mobile phone, i saw this asian guy with the most impressive hair. he managed to successfully put together a fauxhawk and shaggy caesar mix. in my hurried sketch he looks sort of emo or goth. really he was sporting the 'i'm a rich hipster' thing.

promo season part II

i'm on someone else's promo. *grin*
my friends, the talented artists and photographers, tiffany walling mcgarity and john mcgarity have a new agent, veritas management. i was tickled to find out that images from a few photo shoots i posed for are on the veritas website and their new promo card. check out their work at their website and on the agency website. i'm the chick in the red hat and pink hat (tiffany likes to stick these vintage hats on my noggin') in the 'wallingmcgarity' section of veritas under 'portfolio'. i'm also pink capped at the very bottom of their promo shown here. and! from the pink hat photo shoot, the red piebald dachshund is really my pup, nathan. (and yes, he really had a cage on his leg back then.) i love having stylish friends adept at lighting and retouching.

i got my one of my fall promotional projects finished. i'll post them when they're printed. in the meantime, here's a image that i liked that didn't make the cut:

having an idea block for my latest promo due in less than two weeks, i decided to spend my time experimenting some more with my inkings style vs. live trace in CS2. with these i made my inks a little tighter as best i could, and where i couldn't i just touched them up in photoshop after scanning them. this time, after applying live trace to the inks i was even more pleased with the conversion than last time. i was even surprised to find the default conversion was my favorite. different than last time, i kept the entire vectorized image. (usually i dump the vectorized contours and keep just the white areas which i then color - so it ends up vector colors over bitmapped contour lines.) the file sizes of these two are grossly smaller than the other way i do this style of illo but i still prefer the output of the other ones. they seem more luminous or something. i'm sure i'm the only one who can see the difference.

bonjour. happy bastille day! voici un autre dessin.

i love my neighborhood. i live in a brooklyn historic district called clinton-hill. it's full of mansions from the founding family of the pratt institute and about every other style of house. today when i walked out the door to get a baguette, there was live african drum music a half block away at a playgound. they were performing african dance for the kids (and anyone else). how great! i get to walk around and do my errands with a soundtrack. it reminded me of bali were gamelan drifted through air constantly. what a nice day.
