books without illustrations are sad

There is an article today in
The New York Times, "Picture Books No Longer a Staple for Children" talking about the decline of the children's picture book. This is such a shame as the decrease in sales of picture books is apparently being driven by parents who want their kids to be literate faster. I'm glad this article points out the other benefits of having illustration joined with words for cognition. Personally, I remember being angry with my mother the first time she handed me a book without pictures in it. I have always wanted my words to be illustrated.

p.s. it would have been nice and ironic is they had illustrated the article instead of using photography. get clever NYT!
